Coenzyme Q10 is also known as ubiquinone or ubidecarenone. It is a fat-soluble substance, present in most eukaryotic cells and located mainly in the mitochondria. It is a component involved in the electron transport chain, aerobic cellular respiration and energy production in the form of ATP. 95% of the human body's energy is generated this way. Coenzyme Q10 has an antioxidant effect, since it acts as an energy carrier and is continuously transformed through redox from ubiquinone (oxidized form) to ubiquinol (reduced form). Thus, coenzyme Q10 provides protection against oxidation in lipids, proteins, mitochondrial DNA and LDL cholesterol. It also helps regenerate other antioxidant components, such as vitamin E.
